AN OPEN LETTER TO THE PRESIDENT OF COWBOYS FOR TRUMP

To Couy Griffin:

I do not wish to address this letter with the usual salutation because in no way do I want to imply any respect for you, your organization, or anyone stupid enough to follow you. I have over some fifty-five of my 70 plus years,  carried a strong animus for Republicans. For you inarticulate Trump jackasses that is synonymous with hatred. Your party has represented, for much of my life, the confluence of intolerant assholes overzealous Christians, and corporate dicksuckers. From Joseph McCarthy, and Dick Nixon through Ronald Reagan and Donald fucking Trump. You have allowed in your party people who exhibit intolerance in all of its myriad guises: racial, sexual, religious, political. And this brings us to your statement that "the only good Democrat is a dead one."
Are you incapable of thinking up original insults? Must you go back to the 19th century general, Phillip Sheridan for your inspiration? There are far too many people in your party with that kind of tiny intellect, which led me to distance myself from your party over the decades. At one time I could have been one of you, back when there were still people of honor in your party, and Eisenhauer was enjoying his retirement. Those honorable Republicans have been eroded away by the intolerance that has remained in your DNA. Your presidential candidate in 1964, Barry Goldwater stated in his convention speech, "...extremism in defense of liberty is no vice. And let me remind you that moderation in the pursuit of justice is no virtue." I was too young to suss-out the hidden terrors of that bromide at the time, but Goldwater frightened so many voters that he won only his state in that election. Over time the complete craziness of that statement has emerged for enough of us that you people have had to resort to voter suppression to win nationwide office. You, in service of the most corrupt president in our history, are the realization of the hidden terrors of Goldwaters speech.
I'm a liberal. Have been since Bobby Kennedy ran for president. I know the great history of liberalism and am constantly questioning myself and others. I'm also one of those Democrats that you would sentence arbitrarily to death, most likely without even a kangaroo court. As a Democrat I am often disappointed in my party's centrism, but no one to my knowledge has ever called for the death of you people. What's more, we believe in regulating gun possession. We believe it is no more onerous than licensing automobile drivers. There are ignorant people in your party, blind followers who would do your bidding without a second thought. While your statement may have been as innocent of intent as Barry Goldwater's, we cannot be so blind as to miss the increasing racial hatred thanks to the man you drugstore cowboys follow. Without the balancing influence of empathy, abuses of power become possible. In Trump's case they are not just probable, they are existential. I am no threat to your life or your family. I am a threat to your continuance in elective office, and those in your ridiculous party. You may have the numbers now, but autocrats eventually piss enough people off and they revolt. What's more, we will exercise the wit and intelligence that you people lack to ridicule you. That's why you people keep your guns so close.
And by the way, do you take the name of your group, Cowboys for Trump, from the group of gun fighters and murderers that were hired by the Clanton family to steal land from settlers in Wyatt Earp's time? Here is the irony that you people are incapable of seeing, Wyatt Earp asked everybody to leave their guns outside of town. Oh, and not to kill settlers or competing ranchers.

  1. Is this going to disappear? I need to vent! All of those who think of themselves as "cowboys" and "tough guys" are, as said above, without empathy--or even the capacity to understand history. From my observations, they are scared to death of this country becoming one where whites are no longer the majority. In their fear they put forth conspiracy theories and jump up and down about THEIR RIGHTS! So, white people are the only ones with rights? Under Trump, that's obviously the case. The cowboys of old at least had the good sense to use bandanas to prevent dust from getting into their lungs on drives. Trump's "cowboys" don't have the sense to wear a bandana or face covering to protect themselves and others from the pandemic--and are proud of it! The theory that this was planned by our enemy, the Chinese, is flat ridiculous, and Trump's use of the trope "kung-flu" has gotten many Asian people beaten--just for being Chinese. But, as the cowboys of old, you have the same fear of "the other" that they had. This world will not survive without all humans having rights.
